LBHS tennis boys bounce back for two wins, girls go 1 – 1

March 28, 2018 by Methow Valley News

By Don Nelson

The Liberty Bell High School boys’ tennis team rebounded from three season-opening losses to take two matches on the road in the past week, a 3-2 win over Okanogan on March 20 and another 3-2 victory over Lake Roosevelt on Monday (March 26).

The girls’ team dropped their match with Okanogan, 4-1, but overcame Lake Roosevelt, 3-1, on Monday.

At Okanogan, the girls’ No. 1 singles player, Logan Butler, lost 4-8 in pro set play. Ruthann Matteson won, 8-1, and Shelby Vintin suffered her first lost of the season by a 6-8 score. In doubles, Butler and Matteson lost, 5-8, in what coach Dave Schulz called a well-played match. Liberty Bell forfeited the second doubles match.

For the boys at Okanogan, Alex Whites won 8-4, Isaac Blodgett also took his singles match, 8-1, and Tyler White won 8-0 in his first competition of the season.

“He just keeps the ball in play and gets it back every time,” Schulz said of White. “He’s a very consistent model for getting the ball back one more time than his opponent.”

Tim Haley and William Grubb lost their doubles match 0-8, while Konnor Doran and Evan Budrow lost 6-8 in a hard-fought contest.

No individual results were available for the Monday competition at Lake Roosevelt. Liberty Bell was scheduled to be at Tonasket on Thursday (March 29), then will be off for spring break.
