The Liberty Bell High School Knowledge Bowl team finished its regular season with a first-place finish in a tournament at Manson on Monday (Feb. 12), where 20 teams from seven schools competed.
Liberty Bell Team 1 — captain Noah Batson, Emerson Worrell, Lazo Gitchos and Tova Portmann-Bown — took first place with 46 points. Team 2 — captain Liliana Hart-Beck, Michael Mott, Leo Shaw and Nicholas Fitzmaurice — finished fifth with 27 points. Team 3 — captain Wiley Seckinger, Sam Neitlich and Nate Batson — took eighth place with 20 points.
For half the team, this was the last competition of the year, coach Leverett Hubbard reported. Over the next two weeks, six students will be selected to represent Liberty Bell at the regional competition. The top three 2B teams will then travel to Arlington in March to compete in state competition.
Liberty Bell is the defending state champion in the 2B division.
On Feb. 5, Liberty Bell traveled to Moses Lake for the largest regional tournament of the year.
Liberty Bell competes in the North Central Region of the state which is comprised of 17 schools, Hubbard noted, including 4A size Wenatchee and Moses Lake and many smaller 1A and 2B schools.
“Five of the six regular-season tournaments are against our northern regional neighbors such as Tonasket, Omak, Okanogan, Manson, Chelan and Pateros,” Hubbard said. “The Moses Lake tournament allows our students to match wits against students from the rest of the region and much larger schools. This season Liberty Bell has dominated our northern neighbors without a loss, so the fresh competition was welcomed.”
Liberty Bell Team 1 — captain Noah Batson, Emerson Worrell, Lazo Gitchos and Sam Neitlich — finished fifth out of nine schools in Division 1 competition. Moses Lake — the reigning state 4A champion — took first.
In division 2 competition, Liberty Bell Team 2 — captain Liliana Hart-Beck, Michael Mott and Wiley Seckinger — took 13th place overall among 30 schools. Team 3 — captain Leo Shaw, Lindsay Worrell and Nate Batson — took fifth place.
