‘Yes’ for detention center
Dear Editor:
I want to thank the Okanogan County commissioners and county staff members who proposed a very sensible plan to upgrade our county juvenile detention facility, funded by a very small sales tax increase.
Please support these upgrades by voting yes for the County Resolution 70-2017 on your voting ballot.

Ranzau for mayor
Dear Editor:
I write to express my strong endorsement of Sally Ranzau for mayor of the Town of Winthrop. Sally has the skill sets, the demeanor and the desire to be a strong, effective and positive-thinking mayor for our town, both for its resident and its business community. As a longtime resident of the valley and of the Town of Winthrop, I know how important this role can be for our community.
Sally has a strong background in rural communities and has served on and chaired a quasi-municipal organization, working and collaborating with many and varied private interests and governmental entities for community benefits and development. She has a business background and a firm understanding of budget processes, employee relationships and long-range planning. Sally supports careful land use planning and zoning for the town, including the town’s Western theme. She understands the need to strike a balance between strong business and commercial success, and the quality of life of our residents and visitors.
I urge my fellow Town of Winthrop citizens to cast their votes for Sally Ranzau for mayor, and to share their ideas, visions and issues with Sally for the betterment of our town and the surrounding area.

Support tax for detention center
Dear Editor:
I support the 0.1 percent tax proposal of approximately $640,000 for the Okanogan County juvenile detention facility, for the following reasons:
• The facilities need the money for repair, maintenance and operation. To house our young offenders at Martin Hall in Medical Lake would cost the taxpayers more (figures from 2002, when I was an Okanogan County commissioner).
• Services rendered here by local people produced better results. Do you want a three-hour, one-way drive to Medical Lake? Inconvenience and the cost to parents would be extremely expensive.
• How does the young offender feel? Lonely, and like nobody cares. They need encouragement and help.
The tax proposal has my vote!

More flu shots
Dear Editor:
I would like to thank the Methow Valley News and Ann McCreary for the timely and informative article regarding flu season and the options for our community families to receive a flu shot this year. I would also like to inform the community that flu shots are available in Brewster at the Three Rivers Hospital Family Medicine Clinic, Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m.-5p.m. Drop-ins are always welcome and you can call ahead for an appointment. Three Rivers Hospital is the Critical Access facility which serves and is supported by the rural hospital district serving our valley.
