Liberty Bell High School’s cross-country team won three out of five races at the Oroville Invite last Friday (Oct. 13), in the last tune-up competition before the championship part of the season starts this week on the Mountain Lions’ home course.
The middle school girls’ and boys’ teams each took first place, as did the varsity girls’ team. Thirteen schools were represented at the event, which took place at Lake Osoyoos State Park.
The junior varsity boys took fourth place out of five scoring teams, and the varsity boys were fifth out of 10 teams.
With Novie McCabe not running, Liberty Bell’s Gretta Scholz took first place in the girls’ varsity race. Four of the first eight finishers were from Liberty Bell, including Ella Kuzyk in fifth, Athena Milani in seventh and Ice Sukovaty in eighth place. The Lady Lions, ranked first in the state among 2B schools, again prevailed over several larger schools.
The varsity boys, competing without several of their top runners, were led by Emerson Worrell in 14th place. Liberty Bell’s Travis Grialou took first place in the boys’ junior varsity race. Jori Grialou was first among the girls in the middle school race.
Liberty Bell will host the CWB league championship meet on Saturday (Oct. 21), with races starting at 11 a.m. District championships are on Oct. 28, and the state championship meet is on Nov. 4. Last year, the Liberty Bell girls took first place at state, and the boys finished second.
