Killer Whales off to fast start at season-opening meet

June 29, 2017 by Methow Valley News

Methow Valley team hosts Omak this week

By Don Nelson

The Methow Valley Killer Whales swim team opened its 2017 competitive season with a strong showing in its home pool on Saturday (July 24), claiming 27 first-place finishes among the 60 boys’ and girls’ events.

The meet, called the Methow Pentathlon because each swimmer competed in five events, included the other three teams in the Killer Whales’ league: Omak, Okanogan and Brewster.

Coach Bo Thrasher said the team registered a host of personal best times. In addition to the 27 wins, the Killer Whales also finished second 26 times and third 18 times.

Thrasher said that the older swimmers (13 and above) competed in a new event: a 200-meter medley. “They rose to the challenge well,” she said.

Dusty Patterson won the 200M medley in the 13-14-year-old boys’ division, and Nicholas Fitzmaurice won in the 15-18-year-old boys’ race.

Nyah Frantz (girls 7-8) and Shad Frantz (boys 11-12) each won five races. Other multiple winners were Gavin Blank (boys 7-8), Tyler Darwood (boys 13-14), Ava Rothmeyer (girls 11-2), and Fitzmaurice.

The team was at Brewster for a meet on Tuesday (June 27), then will host Omak on Thursday (June 29) at Wagner Memorial Pool. Competition starts at 6 p.m. for the home meet.
