For the second consecutive year, Liberty Bell High School finished fourth out of all the state’s class 2B highs schools in the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA) and Washington Army National Guard Scholastic Cup Championships for the 2016-17 season.
Liberty Bell finished behind Northwest Christian (Colbert), St. George’s and Davenport in the 2B classification, which included 55 schools. Northwest Christian and St. George’s were also the first and second finishers last year.
The year-long competition recognizes the top schools in each of the six WIAA classifications based on academic, athletic and sportsmanship excellence. Points are awarded by a school’s finish in each of the WIAA/Dairy Farmers of Washington/Les Schwab Tires State Championships and Academic State Championships. Sportsmanship is also a factor, with substantial points deducted for ejections from contests.
Big point winners for Liberty Bell in athletic competition were the girls’ cross-country team, which took first in the state, the boys’ cross-country team, which took second in the state, and the girls’ soccer team, which finished fourth at the state tournament. On the academic side, the soccer girls finished first in the state among 2B schools, while the baseball team finished second.
