In a week when Novie McCabe’s Nordic skiing exploits earned her an item in Sports Illustrated magazine’s “Faces in the Crowd” section, the Liberty Bell High School freshman tuned up for post-season track competition with two wins at an eight-team meet in Tonasket on April 18.
McCabe won the 800-meter and 1,600M races with personal bests in each. In the 800M, McCabe led a storm of Liberty Bell personal bests as the Lady Lions swept the first six places (and took ninth and 10th places for good measure). Following McCabe were Lucy Cole, Ava Mott, Maya Sheeley, Gretta Scholz and Athena Milani in second through sixth places. Amelia Eberline was ninth and Icel Sukovaty 10th.
In the 1,600M, Scholz took third, Sukovaty fourth, Mott seventh and Eberline ninth.
Sheeley took two first-place finishes as well, in the 200M dash and the 100M hurdles.
“Cassidy Butler looked good running the 100M hurdles for the first time ever,” the coach said. She finished seventh.
The girls’ relay teams also had a good day. The 4x400M team of Scholz, McCabe, Cole and Milani took first place, and the 4x200M team of Sally Thornton-White, Milani, Cole and Sheeley took second place. The 4x100M quartet of Thornton-White, Cece Odell, Haley Post and Butler took fourth in the 4x100M relay.
On the boys’ side, Emerson Worrell blasted to a personal best in the 800M for first place. Other notable performances were Brayden White’s second place in the 300M hurdles with another personal record, Seth Stevie taking fourth in the 110M hurdles and 300M hurdles, and Zane Herrera finishing fourth in the shot put.
The boys’ 4x100M relay team of Evan Wagstaff, Brady Moriarty, Tanner White and Stevie took fourth place, and the 4x400M relay team of Brayden White, Nick Fitzmaurice, Nielsen and Worrell took second place.
In team scoring, the girls were second behind Okanogan with 114 points, while the boys were seventh with 54 points.
The teams were at Omak for a meet on Wednesday (April 26) and travel to Peshastin on Saturday (April 29) for the Rieke Invitational.
