Mountain Lions move on to state finals on March 18

Liberty Bell High School’s Knowledge Bowl team took first place Monday (Feb. 27) in North Central Washington 2B regional competition at Okanogan, beating a Tonasket team that has been the Mountain Lions’ nemesis all season.

Liberty Bell scored 109 points to Tonasket’s 94. Manson scored 63, Soap Lake 57 and Waterville 28. All but Waterville will advance to the state tournament at Arlington High School on March 18.

The Mountain Lions’ score was higher than any of the other high schools in the 4A, 2A and 1A classifications that were also competing Monday.

Liberty Bell coach Leverett Hubbard said the competition consisted of four oral rounds of 40 questions, and a 50-question written round.  The Mountain Lions won all of the oral rounds and scored 42 points in the written competition — the highest total of any team in Monday’s competition including last year’s 4A state champion Moses Lake.

Participating for Liberty Bell were Colin Waichler, Bram Wathen, Danielle Mott, Corinne Dietz, captain Sebastian Hogness and Noah Batson.

In a match last week, Liberty Bell Team 1 took second place among 18 teams from five high schools. Liberty Bell Team 2 took third place, Team 3 took fifth place and Team 4 took 10th place.
