After winning the Central Washington 2B league championship, the Liberty Bell High School soccer team took its first step toward a fifth consecutive trip to the state tournament in a home match on Tuesday (Nov. 1).
The Lady Lions were to face Bridgeport in a District 5-6 playoff game. If Liberty Bell were to lose that game, it could still play its way back to third place in the districts and a trip to state. If the Lady Lions were to win the first game, they would be guaranteed a trip to state even if they were to lose the district championship match.
In either case, Liberty Bell will play the Brewster Bears on Saturday, Nov. 5, at 2 p.m. at Liberty Bell Junior–Senior High School. See the methow.org calendar, Liberty Bell Booster Club Facebook page or www.cwbathletics.com/tournament.php?tournament_id=2097&sport=11 for details.
Results of Tuesday’s game were not available at press time.
On Oct. 25, Liberty Bell cinched first place in league play with a 3-0 shutout at Tonasket.
The first half ended nil-nil, although Liberty Bell dominated play and peppered the Tonasket goalie with shots. In the second half, Cassidy Butler got the Lady Lions on the board with goal, then followed up with another goal to put Liberty Bell up 2-0.
Danielle Mott finished the scoring for the Lady Lions off an assist by Lauren Fitzmaurice.
Liberty Bell finished the regular season with an 11-1 record in league contests and a 13-2-1 record in overall play. Brewster finished second and Tonasket third.
The Lady Lions were eliminated in the first round of the state tournament last year. In previous years, they finished second, third and fourth.
ACADEMIC HONORS FOR SOCCER TEAM
The Liberty Bell High School girls’ soccer team was recently named winner of the Academic State Championships for schools of similar size. The honor is awarded to the soccer team with the best GPA in the state. The Lady Lions’ GPA was 3.84, and they were also Academic State Champions last season.
