Two shutouts extended the Liberty Bell High School girls’ soccer team’s win streak and put the Lady Lions at the top of league standings in games last week.
On Oct. 18, visiting Liberty Bell blitzed Oroville, 5-0. Sally Thornton-White started the scoring for the Lady Lions with an assist by Corrine Dietz. Lauren Fitzmaurice followed with a goal, and Thornton-White turned a fast break into another Liberty Bell goal and a 3-0 lead. Maya Sheely finished the Lady Lions’ first-half scoring with another goal to put Liberty Bell up 4-0 after 40 minutes.
In the second half, Liberty Bell goalkeeper Lauren Ochoa claimed an unusual stat: an assist. She kicked the ball well downfield to Fitzmaurice, who dribbled to the Oroville net and deked the goalkeeper for Liberty Bell’s final point.
On Thursday (Oct. 20), Liberty Bell returned home to face Brewster, one of its toughest league foes. Ochoa threw another nil at the Bears and the Lady Lions managed a 2-0 win.
The only scoring was first-half goals by Fitzmaurice on an assist by Danielle Mott, and by Tomi Ochoa with an assist by Sheely.
On Tuesday (Oct. 19), the Lady Lions traveled to Tonasket for a game that may determine Liberty Bell’s post-season seeding. With a 10-1 league record (12-2-1) overall, Liberty Bell had an edge on both Brewster and Tonasket, which each had a 9-2 record in league play.
