The National Weather Service has issued a flood watch for today into this evening for the east slopes of the North Cascades.
They predict that moderate to heavy rain will continue to impact the area through this afternoon, followed by periods of locally heavy rain this evening. Rainfall of 1” to 2” is forecast. Areas of greatest concern are around recent burn scars, as well as the Cascade crest, including Highway 20 from Washington Pass to Mazama.
The concern is that with our already saturated soils, the additional rain will trigger mud and rock slides. Also, plugged culverts may cause backups that can wash out roads.
A flood “watch” means flooding/slides are possible but not imminent. Monitor forecasts and, should it change to a “warning,” know that dangerous conditions are imminent.
