Reflecting on the loss to the Methow Valley Ranger District and the entire community on the anniversary of the fire, District Ranger Mike Liu offered some of the thoughts and emotions he shared with his staff a year ago. Following is an excerpt from Liu’s letter of Aug. 19, 2015:

“Today, this beautiful place we call home has claimed the lives of some of our most cherished and dedicated wildland firefighters. Death is no stranger here. We live on hallowed ground….

“Their lives enriched us all, and we honor them…. True heroes, who were willing to serve the community and people they love.”
