Members of the Kid Goats team celebrated their win in the Ski to Sea high school division.

A team of Liberty Bell High School students calling themselves the Kid Goats traveled to Bellingham on Sunday (May 29) to take part in the annual Ski to Sea competition, a multi-sport relay race from Mt. Baker to Bellingham Bay, where they took first place in the high school division and 41st overall among more than 300 teams.

Clair Waichler started things off in the 4-mile cross country skiing leg, in which she placed 19th overall. Nate Hirsch took the baton for the 2.5-mile downhill portion, in which he finished 34th, followed by Eli Nielsen running 8 miles downhill, finishing 38th overall.

Cade Quigley took up the 42-mile road bike leg and finished 47th, followed by Rowan Post and Danny Rodriguez paddling a canoe 18.5 miles down the North Fork of the Nooksack River, finishing 174th overall. Bram Wathen pedaled a cyclocross bike for 20 miles, finishing 75th, and the anchor leg  — 5 miles by kayak in Bellingham Bay to the finish  — was handled by Charlie Thornton-White, who took 73rd place overall.

The Kid Goats’ overall time was 8 hours, 3 minutes and 50 seconds.
