Highway 153 closed near Black Canyon Road

March 6, 2016 by Methow Valley News

By Marcy Stamper

State Highway 153 is closed near Black Canyon Road because of a serious slide of mud and rocks about one mile south of Black Canyon. There are two smaller slides — one north and one south — of the biggest slide.

Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) crews are on site and working to clear debris and stabilize the situation so they can put in a temporary culvert according to the WSDOT maintenance supervisor on scene. Road managers hope to be able to open the road later today (Sunday, March 6, 2016) but cannot make any firm predictions because they have to assess the condition of the roadway and culverts. Crews are still awaiting the necessary equipment as of 11 a.m.
