County commissioners sign new contract with attorney Mackie for land-use matters

March 2, 2016 by Methow Valley News

The Okanogan County commissioners have signed a new contract with attorney Alexander “Sandy” Mackie to continue having Mackie provide legal services for land-use matters and related litigation as a special deputy prosecutor for the county. The agreement runs from March 1 through Dec. 31.

Mackie has been handling land-use matters for the county since June 2013, initially through his former law firm, Perkins Coie. The new contract creates an agreement directly with Mackie because Mackie has retired from the firm. The contract sets a rate of $200 per hour for all work, with malpractice reimbursed at cost. It also covers mileage for out-of-county court appearances.

The previous agreement with Perkins Coie compensated Mackie at $350 per hour for litigation and $300 per hour for administration matters.

Mackie is representing the county in litigation over its comprehensive plan and the vacation of Three Devils Road in the Chiliwist. He also advises the county on its update of the shoreline master program and other land-use documents.

The total amount of compensation Okanogan County paid to Mackie was not available at press time. From October 2013 to February 2015, Mackie received $83,748, according to a public records request made to Okanogan County.

The commissioners signed the new contract at their meeting on Feb. 23.
