Gregg Strome (bib No. 21), Laura McCabe (bib No. 15) and Leslie Hall (bib No. 7) round the corner from Thompson Ridge to Little Wolf at the start of the Winthrop Ski Derby 30-kilometer race.
Fresh snow and warmer-than-expected temperatures created challenges for the skiers who took on 30- and 15-kilometer Nordic courses at the Winthrop Ski Derby on Saturday (Feb. 6) on the Sun Mountain trail system.
The less-than-ideal conditions resulted in slower times than might have been expected. Gregg Strome of Winthrop won the 30K race with a time of 2:02.19, followed by local competitors Laura McCabe in 2:03.19 and Leslie Hall in 2:08.07.
Starting five minutes later didn’t give the 15K racers any advantage.
Louis Sukovaty of Winthrop won in a time of 1:18.30, topping the next two finishers by more than 8 minutes. But both of them were in the 70-plus age category. Paul Karas, 72, of Kirkland, finished in 1:26.41 and 70-year-old Winthrop resident Dan Weinstein finished in 1:30.12. Jen Fry of Winthrop won the 15K women’s division in 1:32.50, ahead of Ashley Lee from the Teacup Lake Nordic program out of Portland, Oregon, in 1:35.46.
