LBHS Knowledge Bowl takes on larger schools

February 13, 2016 by Methow Valley News

Liberty Bell High School’s Knowledge Bowl team faced its toughest challenge of the season on Feb. 1 when it traveled to Moses Lake to compete against 36 teams from more than a dozen other schools from around the region — many of them in much larger enrollment categories.

At the end of the day, Liberty Bell Team 1 took fourth place, Team 2 took 11th place, Team 4 took 19th place and Team 3 took 22nd place.

“Liberty Bell 1 competed against the strongest teams in the region,” said coach Leverett Hubbard. “We have not lost to a team this year and this was an opportunity for the students to go up against high-caliber teams in preparation for the state tournament in March. Our kids were competing against huge schools and did very well.”

After two oral rounds, the third round was a written session in which all teams have 40 minutes as a team to answer 60 multiple-choice questions. Moses Lake had the most correct with 50 points, Cashmere had 49, points, Liberty Bell 47 points, Cascade 46 points, and the Okanogan 1 and Eastmont 1 teams had 43 points each.

Liberty Bell Team 1 was captain Rowan Post, Cory Diamond, Sebastian Hogness and Danny Rodriquez; Team 2 was captain Skyler Fitzmaurice, Nate Hirsch, Colin Waichler and Noah Batson; Team 3 was captain Corinne Dietz, Sylvie LeDuc and Koharu Yonebayashi; and Team 4 was captain Kavi Mitchell, Lazo Gitchos and Liliana Hart-Beck.

The Knowledge Bowl team was scheduled to be in Chelan for a meet on Monday (Feb. 8).
