Methow Valley native Cody Cupp, a senior at Fort Lewis College in Durango, Colorado, competed in the 2016 USA Cycling Cyclo-Cross Nationals on Jan. 8-10 in Asheville, North Carolina.
On the first day of the collegiate competition, Cupp placed fifth out of 78 Division I men, completing six laps of a twisty, steep and muddy course in 52 minutes, 12 seconds to earn a spot on the podium.
On the second day of the event, Cupp rode the leadoff leg for the four-person mixed relay, starting Fort Lewis College off on its way to a second-place finish, and helping the school take second overall among all colleges in the competition.
On the final day, Cupp raced in the Pro 19–22-year-old division, competing against the top riders in the nation. A flat tire on the first lap hampered his usual quick start, but he fought back to finish in 17th place overall.
Cupp is a 2012 Liberty Bell High School graduate. He raced with the Methow Cycle & Sport/Blue Star Coffee Roasters cycling team before heading off to college.
