Last year was the second-busiest year in terms of calls to Okanogan County Fire District 6, surpassed only by 2014 when the Carlton Complex Fire occurred.
District 6, which serves Carlton to Lost River, responded to 284 calls, of which 140 were for fires. The previous year the district responded to more than 300 total calls, said Cody Acord, interim fire chief.
“The Twisp River Fire [in August 2015] added extra calls, and there was a long period with structures threatened by fires,” Acord said.
Firefighters also responded to 81 rescue and EMS calls, 29 false alarms or false calls, 17 good intent calls, 13 service calls and four hazardous conditions calls.
The district covers an area of approximately 350 square miles including all unincorporated areas within its boundary and the communities of Carlton, Mazama, and through contracts with the towns of Twisp and Winthrop.
