Ice rink update
Change of plans at the Winthrop Ice & Sports Rink (WISR): because refrigeration equipment for the new rink surface hasn’t arrived yet, rink operators will resort to the old-fashioned way — covering the surface with water and waiting for it to freeze. Jill Calvert, president of the WISR board, said that may happen later this week, weather conditions permitting. Calvert said the expanded and upgraded building will be ready to go. Start out the new year by trying your hands — and legs — at biathlon, on Jan. 1 from 10:30 a.m.-2 p.m. at the Mazama Biathlon Range. The Methow Valley Biathlon Team will talk about equipment, history, training and safety of the sport before participants take turns shooting at targets and skiing a short and easy biathlon course. Registration begins at 10 a.m. Suggested donation is $25. The event, open to ages 9 and older, is a fundraiser for the biathlon team. A Methow Trails pass is required.
