Liberty Bell’s Micah Klemmeck elevates for a jump shot against Brewster in the first half.
By Don Nelson
The Liberty Bell High School boys’ basketball team came into Friday’s (Dec. 18) home game undefeated, as did visiting Brewster, but it was the powerful Bears who kept their record spotless with a convincing 73-30 victory.
As big as the margin was, the Mountain Lions didn’t fare much worse than any of the Bears’ other opponents this year. Cashmere lost to the Bears by 13 points, but no other team was within 30 points at the final buzzer or has scored more than 35 points against Brewster’s oppressive defense so far this season.
Liberty Bell got off to a decent start for a very early lead, but that quickly evaporated as Brewster jumped to a 15-7 lead after one quarter and extended the margin to 36-18 at halftime.
The Mountain Lions, who had shots but couldn’t get them to fall, managed just 12 points in the second half.
Before the Brewster encounter, Liberty Bell hung on for a tough 66-62 overtime victory at Oroville on Dec. 15 in league play.
The Mountain Lions dropped a close, non-league game to visiting Lakewood, 79-74, on Monday (Dec. 21). Liberty Bell’s record after Monday was 4-2 overall and 2-1 in league play.
Complete statistics weren’t available for the three games reported here, but will be published as soon as possible.
Next up for Liberty Bell is the Chelan Holiday Tournament on Monday and Tuesday (Dec. 28–29).
