The Methow Valley Nordic Team kicked off the race season with a NorAm event at Sovereign Lake Nordic Center near Vernon, B.C., on Saturday and Sunday (Dec. 12 – 13).
Saturday’s competition was a skate sprint. Several skiers advanced in the heats while facing heavy competition. Ella Hall made it to the B finals in the U20 age group, placing 10th overall; Novie McCabe made it to the B final in the Juvenile Girls’ group and finished 11th in that competitive class.
Gretta Scholz narrowly missed moving into the semifinals on her 14th birthday and ended up in 19th place. Emerson Worrell, Peter Aspholm, Walker Hall, Lindsay Worrell and Travis Grialou all were eliminated after their quarterfinal rounds. Several other skiers didn’t advance past the qualifier, but had the good experience of “racing up” in an older age bracket, said team director Leslie Hall.
On Sunday the racers were challenged with an individual-start skate race ranging in distances from 2.5 kilometers to 15K. Geza Sukovaty placed 31st in his tough Junior Men’s (U20) 15K race. Ella Hall was the 5th-place Junior Woman (U20) with a strong 10K race. Emerson Worrell placed 10th and Peter Aspholm finished 17th in the Juvenile Boys’ (U16) 5K race. Novie McCabe sped around the 5K and placed 2nd in the Juvenile Girls’ (U16) race. Gretta Scholz followed with a solid 11th.
In the Midget (U14) category, Walker Hall was 2nd, Travis Grialou 8th and Zane Strome 15th for the boys. For the Midget ladies, Lindsay Worrell was 6th, Liv Aspholm placed 11th, Lena Nelson was 17th, Keeley Brooks 18th, and Eva Weymuller placed 22nd.
