Liberty Bell High School Knowledge Bowl teams swept to first- and second-place finishes on Monday (Dec. 7) in a season opening, five-team tournament hosted by the Mountain Lions.
“It was the most dominating performance by the Liberty Bell program I have ever seen in my 10 years as coach,” said coach Leverett Hubbard.
Liberty Bell 1 — veterans Rowan Post, Cory Diamond, Skyler Fitzmaurice and Sebastian Hogness — went undefeated in three rounds of match-ups and scored 71 points to take first place. Liberty Bell 3, which also went undefeated, was not far behind with 65 points. Liberty Bell 4 took fifth place with 44 points and won each of its matches, while Liberty Bell 2 took eighth place with 29 points. Seventeen teams representing the five schools — Liberty Bell, Okanogan, Omak, Pateros and Tonasket — competed in the meet.
Veteran senior Danny Rodriguez joined three novice seniors — Braum Wathen, Charlie Thorton-White and Sylvie Leduc — on the Liberty Bell 2 team. The Liberty Bell 4 team was headed by junior Nate Hersh and included sophomore Cameron Quinn and freshmen Lilianna Hart-Beck and Lazo Gitchos.
The Liberty Bell program for the 2015-16 year is the largest in team history with more than 20 students regularly attending practices, Hubbard said.
“These students have started the season incredibly strong and I look forward to watching them this year, Hubbard said. “They have acumen to go undefeated during regular season play.”
The Mountain Lions travel to Okanogan on Monday (Dec. 14) for their second tournament.
