News briefs: Nov. 4, 2015

November 7, 2015 by Methow Valley News

Veterans Day closures

It’s open to speculation how much anyone will be able to get done next Wednesday (Nov. 11), the Veterans Day holiday. Post offices, banks, libraries, school districts and all levels of government — local, county, state and federal — will be taking the day off.

That will be complicated by a power outage planned by the Okanogan County Public Utility District from 6 a.m. – 2 p.m. on Wednesday, affecting the area from Carlton to Mazama. Emergency services will still be available.

The Methow Valley News office will also be closed that day.

District 6 budget hearing

A public hearing on the 2016 budget for Okanogan County Fire District 6 will be held at a special meeting on Nov. 18, at 7 p.m., at the Twisp Fire Hall, 434 W. Second Ave. All interested persons are invited to attend.

Twisp OKs 1 percent property tax hike

The Twisp Town Council last week approved an increase in property tax and Emergency Medical Services (EMS) levies collected by the town to 1 percent over the previous year’s revenues.

The town collected $172,500 in regular property taxes, and will collect an additional $1,725 in 2016.

The EMS levy, which supports Aero Methow Rescue services, brought in $44,865 this year and will increase by $449 next year.

One percent is the maximum increase in tax revenue that can be levied by taxing districts unless voters approve a higher tax rate.
