Lariat’s Outlaw and Basecamp coffees both won medals in the Golden Bean competition.
Winthrop-based Lariat Coffee Roasters won two bronze medals at last month’s inaugural Golden Bean North America coffee competition.
Lariat won medals for its Basecamp Espresso and Outlaw Espresso entries in the organic espresso category.
The event was held Sept. 19 in Portland, Oregon. It is an extension of the Golden Bean roasters competition that has been going on for 10 years in Australia. Roasters from the United States and Canada were invited to submit entries.
Lariat and other roasters submitted their entries on a predetermined date and their coffees were judged through a blind tasting format, in more than 10 categories and brew methods. Two head judges, a two-time Golden Bean winner and a World Barista Champion managed the blind tasting over a four-day period.
Lori Loomis, who co-owns Lariat with Bob Gamblin, said that “we wanted to enter a competition that allowed us to put our skillset up against other roasters in a complete, non-biased format. Being judged by the best in our industry, against the best in our industry, is a true test of our skills, and we couldn’t be happier with the outcome.”
Loomis and Gamblin founded Backcountry Coffee Roasters in 2006. They changed the company’s name and brand to Lariat in 2013. For more information about Lariat Coffee Roasters, visit lariatcoffee.com.
