It was a busy week for the Methow Valley Killer Whales swim team, topped off by an appearance at the Toppenish Invitational on Saturday and Sunday (July 11-12).
“We attended the Toppenish meet with 19 swimmers from Brewster and Methow,” coach Jeanne White reported. “Every year we compete as a combined Okanogan team, placing second this year in the small teams division. Our kids placed very well against Yakima-area swimmers who are accustomed to swimming in a 50-meter pool which is a very different experience from our 25-yard pool [in Twisp].”
White said that combined-team members Shad Frantz, Hawke Huff, Tessa Orozco and Kelson Gebbers won high points for their age division, and Bodie Paul missed that distinction by one point.
“Most important to me as a coach, each swimmer achieved many, and some times all, of their fastest times, priming them to finish out the season at county championships on Aug. 1,” White said.
Earlier in the week, the Killer Whales visited Brewster on Thursday (July 9), where they took first place in half of the 80 events.
At a meet in Omak on July 2, the Killer Whales took more than 60 first-place finishes out of 92 events.
The team was scheduled to host Okanogan at Wagner Memorial Pool in Twisp on Tuesday (July 14). The Killer Whales will hit the road this weekend for the Brewster Invitational on Saturday (July 18). Omak will visit on July 21 for a dual meet that starts at 6 p.m.
