The Liberty Bell High School boys’ track team parlayed some personal and team bests into a 16th-place finish among 34 teams last weekend at the state 2B meet in Cheney. The Mountain Lions scored 13 points to tie with Pe Ell and Lind-Ritzville; the meet was won by Raymond with 89.5 points.
On the girls’ side, won by Lind-Ritzville with 74 points, Liberty Bell failed to score. School record-holder Sarina Williams, consistently among the state leaders in the javelin this year, fouled on her first two throws in the finals and finished with a final toss of 105 feet, 3 inches — well off her record of 132-8 — for 10th place.
Lauren Fitzmaurice’s time of 17.71 in the 100-meter hurdles preliminaries — her second finish this year under 18 seconds — did not advance her to the finals. Fitzmaurice cleared 4 feet, 8 inches in the high jump, but could not match her school record of 4-10 and finished in 12th place.
The boys’ 4x100m relay team of Jose Dominguez, Wil Chandler, Andrew Reggiatore and Micah Klemmeck claimed the Mountain Lions’ highest finish, placing fourth in 45.07 seconds. They ran a 44.89 in preliminaries; the school record they set earlier this year is 44.77.
The 4x400m relay team — the same four — set a season-best mark of 3:36.62 in the preliminaries (third all-time on the Liberty Bell records list), but that wasn’t good enough to advance them to the finals.
Micah Klemmeck ran a personal-best 42.50 to take seventh place in the 300m hurdles and claim fifth on the Liberty Bell all-time list. He ran another personal best of 17.09 in the 110m hurdles preliminaries, but was disqualified in the finals.
Wil Chandler took eighth place in the 400m run with a time of 53.18, a personal best that’s also good for sixth on the Liberty Bell all-time list. He did not advance to the finals in the 200m dash.
Ben Klemmeck scored points in two events. He took fifth place in the 3,200m run with a season-best time of 10:04.74. Klemmeck also finished eighth in the 1,600m run with a time of 4:38.25.
Josiah Klemmeck finished 11th in the 3,200m run with a time of 10:33.47, a personal best and good for fourth on the Liberty Bell all-time list.
“Overall, it was a great season,” coach Rocky Kulsrud said. “I’m looking forward to the next one.”
Kulsrud will lose Williams, Chandler, Dominguez and Josiah Klemmeck, who are all seniors.
