The Liberty Bell High School boys’ soccer team made its first-ever foray into the state meet this week with a first-round match on Tuesday (May 19) against Highland High School in Cowiche.
The Mountain Lions earned their way to state with a 2-1 win over Manson on Saturday (May 16), after dropping a 3-1 decision to Brewster on May 12.
All the scoring occurred in the first half of the Manson game, on a goal by Jorge Lara off an assist by Bram Wathen, and a penalty kick goal by Willy Duguay. Manson scored on a penalty kick.
Liberty Bell clamped down tight in the second half to secure the victory and a spot among the 16 teams in the state tournament.
Against Brewster, the Mountain Lions managed a 1-1 tie at halftime thanks to a Lara goal, but the Bears hit the net twice in the second half to leave Liberty Bell in a must-win situation against Manson.
If Liberty Bell beats Highland, it will move into the round of eight to face the winner of the game between Granger and Chelan.
