A trial scheduled for Dec. 2 in the arson case against Larry Dewayne Smith, 63, of Twisp was postponed and a new trial in Okanogan County Superior Court has not been scheduled, according to Joe Caldwell, a deputy criminal prosecutor in the Okanogan County prosecutor’s office.
Smith is charged with two counts of first-degree arson in connection with backfires set during the Carlton Complex Fire in Finley Canyon and Benson Creek.
According to documents filed in connection with the case, Smith was working as a freelance firefighter and was not assigned to the fire or communicating with assigned fire crews. His actions endangered firefighters and the public, and caused damage to structures and property, according to court documents.
