Two new programs have been launched to help veterans with housing and jobs — and to make it easier for vets to receive social and health-care services in Okanogan County so that they don’t have to travel long distances for these programs.
HopeSource is a new program that will be coordinated by Okanogan County Community Action Council to help veterans find stable housing situations. The augmented services come through a grant from the Secretary of Veterans Affairs, which will enable Community Action to hire a social-service provider in Okanogan County.
Community Action is currently recruiting for the position, and preference will be given to veterans. The outreach specialist is expected to start in early December.
In addition to supplementing existing programs, the specialist will help locate other veterans who could benefit from the housing and support services. The grants have also been provided to assist veterans in five other underserved counties in central Washington.

Washington’s job-placement service has launched a new tool to help veterans using the online WorkSource system to find civilian jobs. The tool allows veterans to convert military occupation codes into specific jobs that match their skills and experience.
Veterans can also sign up for email notification when there are job openings that match their skills. The website is at workinwashington-veterans.jobs.
WorkSource has specialists to help veterans find jobs. The main WorkSource website is at go2worksource.com, and there are links to special services for veterans. Call (360) 407-1389 for more information.
