Makhala Fox has been crowned Methow Valley Rodeo queen 2015 and Mihayla Phillips will serve as princess.
Three girls — 18-year- old Fox from Carlton, 15-year-old Phillips of Twisp, and 14-year-old Bailey Flagg of Benton City — tried out for the title in the chilly rain at the rodeo arena on Saturday. The girls rode a predetermined pattern for the judges, followed by a grand entry on horseback. The candidates were also interviewed and gave a short speech to the gathered friends and family members. “My heart lies with rodeo,” said Fox. “This is a dream come true.”
Outgoing 2014 rodeo queen Mckenna Risley told of rodeos she attended last summer and gave two pieces of advice to the incoming royalty: Don’t borrow a horse for an out-of-town rodeo, and arrive at least two hours early for those events. Risley also donated a pair of custom-made chaps to the rodeo for future queens.
