Learn about opportunities in community theater

October 2, 2014 by Methow Valley News

By Laurelle Walsh

The Merc Playhouse is holding open auditions on Saturday (Oct. 4) at 10 a.m.

This is an opportunity for people to get involved in community theater in a number of small and large ways, according to Merc Artistic Director Ki Gottberg. “I want to meet whomever is interested,” she said.

Gottberg said she wants to open the playhouse doors every so often to people who want to read for her — she will have some short dramatic pieces for people to read at the audition — or present something that they have prepared, or propose something they’d like to see produced at The Merc.

“I don’t want people to think of this as an ‘audition,’ since they don’t have to come with anything prepared,” Gottberg said. “But if someone has a piece they’d like me to see, I am all for it! I would prefer to call this an ‘open opportunity’ for performers of all ilks.”

Upcoming on-stage opportunities include roles in December’s Winter Wonder show, a Merc Children’s Theater production of Shakespeare’s As You Like It, and the summer comedy The Importance of Being Earnest. Actors and directors are also sought for several upcoming Readers Theater productions.

The Merc also welcomes people who’d like to help out with off-stage roles: stage managing, props, costuming, set building, painting, and sound and light operations.

For more information, or to request another time to meet, call The Merc at 997-7529 or email ki@mercplayhouse.org.
