The Winthrop Planning Commission will host a public workshop on Tuesday (July 8) to discuss progress on updating the town’s comprehensive plan.
The event begins at 6 p.m. at the Winthrop Barn and will include refreshments and a power point presentation on the existing draft of the comp plan update. Planning commission members and town staff will take public comments and answer questions.
Town planner Rocklynn Culp said the commission has been working on the land use element of the plan for several months and has identified some key areas of discussion, including affordable housing, connectivity (getting around town), and balancing housing density with neighborhood character.
Review of the comp plan started about five years ago, Culp said, and the commission has made “slow, steady progress.” The commission hopes to have a completed draft ready for consideration and adoption by the Town Council by the end of this year, Culp said.
Consideration of the land use element started out as a “tweaking” process, Culp said, but the planning commission ultimately decided that more reworking was necessary.
Both the existing and draft comprehensive plan land use elements and land use designation maps are on the Town of Winthrop’s website at www.townofwinthrop.com, or available at Town Hall on Riverside Avenue for anyone interested in reviewing them prior to the meeting.
