The Liberty Bell High School varsity track and field team took 17 athletes to the 2B District 5/6 Championships at Ephrata on Saturday (May 24) and following a performance that included a new school record and 20 personal bests, 13 of those will advance to the state championships at Eastern Washington University in Cheney Friday and Saturday (May 30 – 31).
Those who placed among the top two district finishers and qualified for state include seniors Liam Daily, Austin Watson, Jaymis Hanson, Cesar Dominguez, Kelsey Jensen, Hannah Hafsos, and Lilly Schlotzhauer (relay alternate); juniors Jose Dominguez and Jessica Johnson; sophomores Ben Klemmeck, Claire Waichler, and Micah Klemmeck (relay alternate); and freshman Lauren Fitzmaurice.
“We will be competing in nine events on the boys’ side and five events on the girls’ side,” said coach Rocky Kulsrud.
The school record came in the boys’ 4 x 400-meter relay, beating last year’s previous best by over a second.
Jensen, Hanson, Dominguez and Daily notched the new mark at 3 minutes, 31.17 seconds. Three of those four runners — Jensen, Dominguez and Daily — set the old record of 3:32.25 in 2013. Hanson replaced 2013 graduate Justin McMillan on this season’s team.
Daily and Ben Klemmeck owned the 800-, 1,600-, and 3,200-meter runs. Watson won the long jump and Fitzmaurice the 300-meter hurdles.
