Despite injuries that are keeping some star athletes off the competitive roster, the Liberty Bell High School varsity track and field team made good account of itself at the Rieke Invitational at Cashmere last Friday (April 25).
In a field that included 11 schools ranked 1A or larger, the Mountain Lions came away with three first-place medals in high jump, 800 meters and 1,600 meters.
Senior Liam Daily and sophomore Ben Klemmeck continue to lead the way in the 800- and 1,600-meter races. Jaymis Hanson cleared the bar at 5 feet, 10 inches, to tie his best effort in the high jump. Hanson also took third in the long jump with a leap of 19 feet, 9 inches.
Coach Rocky Kulsrud singled out the personal-best performance of junior Josiah Klemmeck in the 3,200 meters at Rieke. Klemmeck’s time of 10:50.01 beat his previous best time by some 30 seconds and elevated him to fifth on Liberty Bell’s top 10 in the school record book. Klemmeck also sits second in the 1,600 meters behind his brother Ben on the LBHS all-time list.
“The main concern right now is to get a few guys totally healthy,” Kulsrud said.
Liberty Bell was among 17 boys’ teams and 21 girls’ teams that competed at the Rieke.
The Mountain Lions will travel to Oroville on Saturday (May 3) for the Draggoo Financial starting at 11:30 a.m. Liberty Bell will host its own home invitational on Friday, May 9.
