The Liberty Bell High School varsity track and field team turned in a number of first-place performances at the eight-team Bridgeport League Meet on March 25, and held its own at the 22-school Ezra Gordon Invitational at Colville last Saturday (March 29).
The boys’ team placed second at Bridgeport behind the host Mustangs, while the girls finished in sixth position. Also competing at Bridgeport were Entiat, Waterville, Manson, Soap Lake, Wilber-Creston and Columbia Basin Secondary School.
The Mountain Lion boys tied for 10th with Liberty Spangle in the middle of the pack at Colville.

Senior Liam Daily placed first in both the 400-meter and 800-meter runs at Bridgeport, and teammate Ben Klemmeck captured the 3,200-meter event.
Austin Watson won the long jump and anchored the boys’ winning 4×100 relay behind Cesar Dominguez, Jaymis Hanson and Jose Dominguez.
The 4×400 team comprised of Cesar Dominguez, Hanson, Kelsey Jensen and Daily won the relay. Lauren Fitzmaurice swept the women’s 300-meter hurdles.
The Mountain Lions are not yet at full strength as key veterans Austin Watson and Sarina Williams continue to recover from earlier injuries.
Coach Rocky Kulsrud noted that a number of his athletes continue to improve with each meet.
“We had an excellent performance by Ben Klemmeck in the mile at Colville,” Kulsrud said. The sophomore “came from behind and took the lead with 50 meters to go but lost at the finish by less than a stride, a season best for Ben,” the coach said.
Kulsrud said brothers Micah and Josiah Klemmeck continue to improve in each of their events, as does Jensen in the hurdles.
Following spring break, the Mountain Lions will compete at the Cashmere Invitational on April 12.
