The Winthrop Ski Derby, which was scheduled for this Saturday (Feb. 8), has been cancelled.
“While there is good skiing in most areas, several of the trails used by the race do not have enough snow to set classic tracks, and alternatives to make a 30-kilometer race loop are lacking,” said Nordic Club spokesman Jim Kelley.
Last week’s snowfall improved ski trail conditions in many areas of the valley, Kelley said; however, trails in heavily forested areas often do not accumulate as much snow depth because tree cover blocks the falling snow.
“There still is not quite enough snow to set continuous tracks on several key trails,” according to the Nordic Club website. “We do not feel that the Ski Derby goal of providing a distance classic race … over scenic and challenging terrain could be met with the available trails at Sun Mountain.”
