Arts briefs: Jan. 15, 2014

Jazz, etc., at Twisp River Pub

Jazz and ventures into other genres such as blues and rock will be featured Sunday (Jan. 19) at the Twisp River Pub, where Rendezvous #9, the Pipestone Jazz Ensemble, Wayne Mendro, Bob Hougham, Terry Hunt and Emele Clothier will perform. The free show begins at 6 p.m. For more information, call 997- 6822.

Poetry reading at bookstore

Spokane-based poet Ellen Welcker, who appeared last summer at the Mazama Festival of Books, will be at Trail’s End Bookstore in Winthrop on Sunday (Jan. 19) to do readings from her work. The free event begins at 5:30 p.m. For more information, call 996-2345.

More Open Merc!

The Merc Playhouse in Twisp will host another session of Open Merc! on Tuesday (Jan. 21) beginning at 7 p.m. Egon Steinebach hosts the event, which is open to musicians and performers of all types. There is no cover charge. Beer and wine will be available for purchase. For more information, call 997-7529.

Family concert by OVOC

Okanogan Valley Orchestra and Chorus will present a family concert on Feb. 9 beginning at 3 p.m. in the Omak Performing Arts Center. The chorus will feature “You’ve Got a Friend in Me” by Randy Newman, “Jabberwocky” by Sam Pottie, “Beethoven’s Wig” arranged by Michael Geiger, and more. The orchestra will perform the narrative of “Peter and the Wolf” by Prokofiev, and there will be a special performance by Second Strings, a small string group. Ticket prices are $12 for adults, $10 for seniors, $8 for youth and free for children under 12. For more information, call (509) 322-0261.
