Broken water main repaired in Winthrop

A broken municipal water line in downtown Winthrop last week temporarily shut down water service to some downtown businesses.

A leak was discovered Thursday morning (Aug. 29) in a two-inch line serving Farmers State Bank and The Old Schoolhouse Brewery. The line had broken where it ran beneath the bank, sending water into the basement of the building, said Rick Karro, Winthrop public works superintendent.

“We had four feet of water in the basement, so we had to pump that out,” said Georgia Adams, a bank director. She said no equipment or records were damaged by the water.

Water was shut off between the four-way intersection and Carlos 1800 Restaurant until Thursday afternoon while crews from the town and Lloyd Logging made repairs.

Karro said two new water lines were extended from beneath Riverside Avenue to serve the bank and the brewery.
