Don Kumm, 74, of Bellingham, passed away May 31, 2013, after a valiant fight with cancer, surrounded by family and friends. Don was born to Roy and Doris Kumm on the family ranch near Mazama on May 7, 1939. He graduated from Winthrop High School. The summer he was 18, he worked for a contractor driving a cat rebuilding the road to Harts Pass. He worked in the woods and drove truck over the roads of the Pacific Northwest until his retirement eight years ago.
In retirement he and his bride, Leslie, enjoyed traveling the country visiting aircraft museums, lighthouses and natural wonders. His love of aviation was expressed in his volunteer work at Bellingham’s Heritage Flight Museum. Don is survived by his wife, Leslie; his sister, Leanna Melton; his nine kids and their spouses; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. His kind spirit and gentle strength touched the lives of countless acquaintances, co-workers and friends.
A graveside service was held on June 7 at Enterprise Cemetery north of Ferndale. In lieu of flowers, please feel free to make a contribution in Don’s name to Whatcom County Hospice House, St. Joseph’s Cancer Center or the Heritage Flight Museum.
