Frisbee to the ultimate

May 19, 2013 by Methow Valley News

Feel like taking a fling at competitive Frisbee?

A free, co-ed ultimate Frisbee tournament is scheduled for May 27 at Liberty Bell High School, beginning at 10 a.m.

Participants can create their own teams of up to eight members (six play at any one time). At least two players must be high school students, and at least two must be adults. A minimum of one “opposite sex” member must be on each team – in other words, a team could be seven women and one man, or vice-versa.

The competition will be limited to eight teams. Each team is guaranteed at least two games in the tournament.

Deadline for team entries is Monday (May 20). Submit entries to Tim Lewis, tslewis15@gmail.com, by 9 p.m. that day. Teams will receive a schedule within two days. Call 996-3766 for more information.

The Liberty Bell class of 2013 will be selling food and drinks, including lunch items such as burgers and hot dogs, and more throughout the day.

Participants are asked to bring one non-perishable food item per team for The Cove’s food bank.

Ultimate Frisbee is something like a combination of soccer and football. The teams each defend an end zone, and the team on offense tries to advance the Frisbee to the other end zone. The disc can only be moved by passing – the person holding the disc cannot run but must pass it to a teammate. If the Frisbee is caught in the opponent’s end zone, it counts as a goal.

Of course, the other team’s players try to prevent that while they are on defense.
