The Liberty Bell High School varsity boys’ tennis team kept its undefeated league winning streak alive with a 3-2 victory over White Swan in matches held at Wenatchee last Saturday (April 20), after giving up a 3-2 decision to 1A Chelan two days earlier.
Coach Dave Schulz said that aside from his two leading doubles players, Manuel and Carlos Perez, who both won their matches, his doubles teams didn’t play up to par against the Goats.
The Liberty Bell girls lost to a strong Goats’ team, 0-5. Against White Swan, third singles player Seppe Sebreghts scored a 6-4, 6-0 win that, added to wins by the Perez cousins, gave Liberty Bell the breathing room needed to secure the 3-2 edge. Carlos Perez was credited with the big match of the day when he came back from a 4-6 first set loss to win the second and third sets, 6-1 and 6-2. The number-one doubles team of Daniel Sonnichsen and Jesse Schulz faltered against a Cougars’ team they had beaten in two sets earlier in the year and lost a three-set battle, 4-6, 6-3, 2-6.
Sickness kept the girls’ number-one and -two singles players, Keanna King and Dawn Smith, off the courts and enabled the White Swan girls to prevail, 4-1.
Liberty Bell will host the final three games of the regular league season beginning with Lake Roosevelt Thursday (April 25) at 4:30 p.m. followed by Oroville Saturday (April 27) at 11 a.m. and Pateros Tuesday (April 30) at 4:30 p.m.
