Long run
Liberty Bell senior Chuck Long spent his lunch hour on Monday running six times around the high school in nearly full camo gear. Long said he wanted a physical challenge to experience “a little bit of what it’s like to be in active service.” Long said fellow students and staff had cheered him on and understood that he wanted to convey his support for soldiers.

Mazama

Winthrop honors volunteer contributions
By Ashley Lodato
According to anecdotal evidence, the ’49ers Day parade in Winthrop was the best-attended ever. At least, that’s how it seemed to those participating in the parade.
I had planned to drop my kids off at the Methow Cycle & Sport staging area and then become a spectator as they rode through the parade on their bikes. But when it became apparent to entry organizer Julie Muyllaert that most of the 30 or so kids’ parents planned to do this READ MORE >>

Twisp
By Sally Gracie
Jeff Koma’s recent talk about researching the reproduction and nesting habits of white-headed woodpeckers made me wish I’d been an ornithologist. Their nests are holes drilled most frequently in decayed Ponderosa snags. Jeff showed how he uses a neat gizmo called a “tree top peeper,” a telescopic pole with a camera on the end to photograph the nestlings. Jeff conducted his studies in managed forests, some in Okanogan County.
