Mike Maltais hacks away at sports because “those other subjects require actual work or thinking…and often both!” He has won numerous journalism awards on those occasions when his professional colleagues either declined or forgot to submit entries. The intrepid sportswriter has been married for 46 years to Kathleen Joy, whom concerned friends sympathetically label “a living magnet for lost causes.” He owns three pot-licking dogs that double as accessorial ornaments for his derelict 1980s vintage pickup and is, in turn, owned by an illegitimate cat with an over-inflated sense of entitlement. The couple live on a sprawling two-plus acre ranch yonder of Twisp, where, together with an assortment of wild varmints, they share a rustic log home that the county assessor delicately describes as being in a perpetual condition of “stately decay.” Owing to prudent retirement planning they all head south during the cold months to spend winters at the destination resort of Pateros. Maltais wants to be a fireman when he grows up – or a cowboy if he doesn’t.
