More about the ranch

Dear Editor:

The Prewitt Ranch article (May 23) was interesting but the writer leaves you with the impression that the Prewitts have always owned the ranch.

The original Prewitt ranch was just north of Balky Hill Road. Their house was completely consumed by fire in the late 1940s or early 1950s.

The current Prewitt Ranch was always known as the LaMotte Place, which Hector LaMotte bought from Ash Davis in 1924. Hector owned it until his death in 1964. His wife, Matilda, who was an immigrant from Finland, passed on in 1969. This can be found in Dale Dibble’s “Methow Pioneers” book. He didn’t say when Del bought the ranch.

We were neighbors to Hector and “Tilly,” as everyone called her, for quite a few years, and my dad worked for Hector in the late 1950s and early 1960s until he had a heart attack and couldn’t work any more.

Anyway, just a little more history on the place to show it wasn’t always the Prewitt Ranch.
