It looked like Dashe McCabe of Mazama was just out for a fun run among the arrowleaf balsamroot, but she was competing in the Sunflower races last weekend.

Alex Taylor of Seattle was the overall winner of the Sunflower Marathon last weekend as nearly 500 runners competed in the full-distance race, half-marathon and relay along the length of the Methow Valley.

Taylor’s time of 3:19:35 was 14 minutes ahead of second-place finisher Alexei Desmarais of Bellingham. The first local finisher was Leo Brett of Mazama in sixth place. Joey Nishida of Twisp was 16th, and Paul Schmekel of Twisp finished 18th. Mazama’s Andy Croy took 21st place.

Kelsey Mcgill of Winthrop was the top local finisher in the 18-39 women’s results, in 10th place.

Nina Hadley of Seattle took first place among men and women runners alike in the half-marathon. Liz Walker of Winthrop was 25th; Jennifer Schumacher of Winthrop 36th; and Luke Garing of Winthrop 39th.

The Goat’s Beard team from Mazama took first place in the relay with a time of 3:03:50. To Be Decided, a team from Winthrop, took fourth place. The Jackrabbits of Winthrop finished seventh, while the Too Hot to Trot Moscow Mules of Winthrop took 18th place.
