Julianne Helen Hamel

Julianne Helen Hamel passed away Nov. 7 after a long illness at Jamie’s Place in Winthrop. Julie was born on Sept. 26, 1936, in Portland, Oregon, to Dr. Jergen Julius and Mrs. Helen Frahm. After attending Oregon State University, she received her MA in psychology from Case Western Reserve in Cleveland, Ohio.

Upon her return to Portland, Julie opened a private practice counseling at-risk youth. Thanksgiving of 1966, Julie met her future husband, Richard P. Hamel, on a ski trip to Mount Hood Meadows. They were wed the next year and found their way to Winthrop in November of 1969. In 1970, Julie and Richard opened the doors to the Virginian Resort, which welcomed guests for the next 32 years under their ownership. Upon retirement Julie devoted her time to her to her gardens and volunteering in the community. She is survived by her husband of 50 years, Richard, and their sons Peter (Rene), Christopher and Jeremy; and grandsons Dylan, Eric, Nicolas and Gavin.

A celebration of life will be held on Sunday, Dec. 3, at the Winthrop Barn from 1 – 3 p.m. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to Jamie’s Place in Winthrop.
