Illnesses, injuries and scheduling conflicts made a few dents in the Liberty Bell High School cross-country team’s ranks, but the Mountain Lions’ overall strength once again proved potent at the Wenatchee Invite on Saturday (Sept. 23).

More than two-dozen high schools, most of them larger than Liberty Bell, fielded runners for the event, which featured races in several age divisions.

The big win of the day came in the varsity girls’ race, which the Liberty Bell squad won behind the first-place finish of sophomore Novie McCabe over the 3-mile course.

Not far behind was Liberty Bell sophomore Gretta Scholz in third place. Also scoring points for the Lady Lions were junior Athena Milani, 16th, junior Ella Kuzyk, 19th, and junior Icel Sukovaty, 27th. Freshman Liv Aspholm, who had a break-out race a week earlier, suffered a leg cramp and did not finish.

The varsity boys’ team, missing some top runners, still managed to finish 12th among 25 teams. Liberty Bell’s top finisher was senior Eli Nielsen in 44th place, followed by freshman Ian Delong in 53rd, junior Emerson Worrell in 58th and freshman Travis Grialou in 66th.

In the seventh-grade boys’ race, Liberty Bell’s Eamon Monahan took third place to lead the Mountain Lions to the team victory. Liberty Bell had five of the first 11 finishers.

The Liberty Bell girls took second place in the eighth-grade race, with Jori Grialou claiming first place and Mahali Kuzyk fourth place.

Next up for Liberty Bell is the Nike 11th annual Twilight Invitational on Saturday (Sept. 30) at Cedar Crest Golf Course in Marysville.
