The artist Vblast will be exhibiting vibrant, new works on paper at the Spartan Art Project on the TwispWorks campus.
After a career as a commercial artist, Vblast (Vern White) found working on paper has allowed him a sense of freedom that recalls his early explorations of art.
Although he notes that paper lends itself well to immediacy and economy, Vblast’s works are anything but simple, economic sketches. His works on paper are vivid and provocative, mixing themes of skulls and human figures with birds and text. As Vblast says, the process gives him “childlike abandon to create work that provokes and questions.’
Vblast has devoted himself to his own work and a journey into abstraction and sculpture for the past 15 years. He calls himself “an unreformed punk rocker who hides behind the slim veil of respectability. I like nothing more than giving a poke in the eye,” he said.
An opening of Vblast’s work is in the Spartan art trailer on the TwispWorks campus on Saturday (April 23) from 2 to 6 p.m.
