Marbeled murrelet topic of talk
“Rare Bird: Pursuing the Mystery of the Marbled Murrelet” is the topic of the Methow Conservancy’s First Tuesday program (Sept. 2), beginning at 7 p.m. at Sun Mountain Lodge. The free event will feature naturalist and author Maria Mudd Ruth, who will share tales from her book Rare Bird, described as part naturalist detective story, part environmental inquiry celebrating the world of the endangered Pacific Northwest seabird, the marbled murrelet. No Duck Race this year
The 16th annual Duck Race, traditionally sponsored on Labor Day by Winthrop Kiwanis, will have to wait until next year. Kiwanis president Don Carlson said several Kiwanis members are on firefighting crews and the club has had other pressing matters to deal with. Carlson said the race — which involves dumping hundreds of rubber ducks into the Chewuch River from the bridge in downtown Winthrop, and then seeing which three bob down to the Methow River Bridge ahead of the others to win prizes for their lucky ticket-holders — will be back next year.
